(Digitaria exilis and Digitaria Iburua), locally known as Acha is probably the oldest African cereal. Natural to the West African Region, Fonio is a member of the millet family. It is one of the most nutritious of all grains. Its seed is rich in methionine and cystine, amino acids vital to human health and deficient in today's major cereals: wheat, rice, maize, sorghum etc.
It has been said that Fonio might be "crowned as king of all foods". Fonio is easy to cook, gluten free and can be made into several healthy recipes.
